Post-operative treatment

Main load area of the femoral condyles

  • Mobilization on the second post-operative day after removal of redon drain(s)
  • Partial weight bearing with 20 kg on the affected extremity for 6 weeks with free joint mobility
  • Continuous passive motion on the CPM machine for 1 hour at least twice a day
  • From week 7 weight bearing is increased to 30 kg for 2 weeks up to full weight bearing
  • When full weight bearing has been achieved, cycling, swimming, and careful muscle build-up by means of isometric training are allowed.
  • High impact and contact sports are allowed after 1 year.

Patella and retropatellar glide bearing

  • Mobilization on the second post-operative day after removal of redon drain(s)
  • Knee flexion is restricted to 0-0-30° with an IROM splint for 6 weeks
  • Partial weight bearing with 20 kg on the affected extremity for 1 week
  • Full weight bearing is allowed from week 2
  • After 6 weeks, flexion is increased by 30° every two weeks. When the flexion range extends to 90°, the IROM splint can be removed.
  • When 90° flexion has been achieved, cycling, swimming, and careful muscle build-up by means of isometric training are allowed.
  • Sports activities with a high risk of falling are allowed after 1 year.
